What to Expect During Home Addition Construction

What actually happens once the build starts — and how a well-run site keeps you informed the whole way.

Updated June 2026 · Awesome Additions · Sample editorial content

Once permits are approved and selections are locked, construction follows a predictable rhythm.

The general sequence

  • Site prep & demolition — protection goes up first.
  • Foundation — footings and slab for the new structure.
  • Framing — the addition takes shape; framing inspection.
  • Roof, windows & weatherization — closing in the structure.
  • MEP rough-in — electrical, plumbing, HVAC; inspections.
  • Insulation, drywall & finishes — flooring, paint, trim, fixtures.
  • Final inspection & walkthrough — punchlist, then warranty.
